The European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA) has responded to the EU Commission’s action plan for intellectual property by praising its commitment to the launch of a Unified Supplementary Protection Certificate (SPC) grant mechanism. However, the EFPIA also expressed concern over the action plan’s reference to coordinating compulsory licensing. The Director General of the EFPIA stated that compulsory licensing is not an effective tool for increasing accessibility and will cut down on the incentive to invest in medical innovation at a time when it is the need of the hour.
