WiLAN Inc. and its subsidiary Polaris Innovations Ltd. have entered into a licensing deal and have also settled litigation related to TV as well as display technologies with LG Electronics Inc. Notably, the licensed patents relate to digital display, TV technologies, and memory interface technologies. The terms and conditions of the deal have not been divulged.

LG Dominates in Patent Validity Battle at the PTAB

LG Electronics Inc. has been able to get a victory at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) as it got claims of a 3D pointing device patent belonging to CyWee Group Ltd., invalidated. The board also rejected CyWee’s substitute claims citing obviousness while rejecting other claims on the grounds of exceeding the scope of the original claims.

PTAB Changes its Mind About Patent Challenged by Emerson

Kingston to Shell Out More after Court Increases Patent Infringement Damages

Kingston Technology Co. Inc. will have to pay a higher sum as damages to Pavo Solutions Pte Ltd in a patent infringement lawsuit that the former lost. The decision to increase the damages amount by 50% was taken by the US District Court for the Central District of California due to Kingston’s continued sale of allegedly infringing USB drives even after it received a formal notice of the potential infringement.

PTAB Accepts Petition to Review USB Patent

The Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) accepted a petition for review of a USB patent by Western Digital Corp. against inventor Martin Kuster. The review petition was accepted by the board despite Kuster’s argument asserting a parallel lawsuit proceeding involving the same patent at the US District Court for the Western District of Texas. The inventor stated that the PTAB should use its discretion to reject the review petition since the trial is scheduled for November, more than three months before the board would pronounce its ruling. However, the PTAB stated that the date for the legal proceeding may not be rigidly set and can be changed.

Licensing Agreement Protects Infinera from Patent Infringement Lawsuit

The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC) has affirmed a lower court verdict against Oyster Optics LLC which blocked them from filing a patent infringement lawsuit against Infinera Corp. Oyster cannot be allowed to file infringement allegations because of a licensing agreement that it signed previously.
