The U.S. President Joe Biden has nominated the head of Winston & Strawn LLP (Silicon Valley), Kathi Vidal to perform as the next U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Director. Vidal is an experienced patent litigator with experience across district courts, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC), the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) and the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC).
USPTO Appoints Performance Review Board Chair and Members

The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has announced the appointment of several members as well as the chair of the Performance Review Board. It is the board’s responsibility to execute the executives’ pay and performance policy. The 12 members and two alternates selected for the board are all existing patent office executives.
Kimberly Moore Appointed as Federal Circuit Chief Judge

The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC) has a new Chief, Kimberly Moore. Moore is replacing former judge Sharon Prost as the Chief Judge of the CAFC. The new judge is known to be consensus gathering while being a taskmaster at the same time. She is expected to bring in more consensus on the state of patent eligibility law, which has been a bone of contention in the recent years.

The Patents Court in London has a new Judge, Richard Meade. Meade succeeds Judge Colin Birss and will also be responsible for the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court (IPEC). Judge Richard has a reputation for handling some major patent disputes in the recent past.

The US Subcommittee on Intellectual Property will have a new chair to replace Senator Thom Tillis. Senator Patrick Leahy will now take Tillis’ place as the chair. Leahy is known to be the lead author of the America Invents Act.
