The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC) has reversed the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware’s ruling related to CosmoKey Solutions GmbH & Co. KG’s multifactor authentication technique patent. The district court ruled in favour of Duo Security Inc. and claimed that the patent covers only an abstract idea of identity verification to permit transaction access. CAFC overturned the ruling claiming that the technique is eligible for legal protection and is more than an abstract idea.
Cisco to Pay Enhanced Damages to SRI over Willful Infringement

SRI International Inc.’s plea to reinstate enhanced damages for Cisco Systems was accepted by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC). The CAFC found considerable evidence regarding intentional infringement by the defendant of a hacker security patent. The plaintiff had pleaded for enhanced damages and attorney’s fees.

Next Caller Inc. has persuaded the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC) for the revival of a part of its bid seeking review of the anti-spoofing patent of NeuStar Inc’s TrustID. The Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) had ruled invalidated most of the said patent as obvious. CAFC has nodded to Next Caller’s appeal and ordered reconsideration.
CAFC Orders Juniper’s Patent Dispute to be Moved from Waco to California

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC) has ordered a judge of the U.S. District Courtfor the Western District of Texas to transfer the patent dispute between Juniper Networks, Inc. and Brazos Licensing and Development from Waco, Texas to Northern California. The judge has been lashed out by CAFC to transfer patent lawsuits filed by other companies, such as Samsung Electronics, The Walt Disney Company and Comcast’s owned Hulu.

Centripetal Networks Inc. has brought former U.S. Patent and Trademark Office(USPTO) Director Andrei Iancu and a few others to defend against Cisco System Inc.’s appeal for a damages award worth USD 2.7 billion. Centripetal informed the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC) about bringing ex-USPTO director and two of his Irell & Manella colleagues as counsels.
VirnetX Asks USPTO for Rehearing on Apple’s IPR Decisions after New Chief’s Appointment

VirnetX Inc. appealed to the Director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for rehearing of inter partes review (IPR) rulings involving its USD 576 million judgement against Apple. Notably, VirnetX requested rehearing of the IPR decisions invalidating network security patents but also asked the office to wait until it had a permanent director.
