Maxeon and Canadian Solar Resolve Patent Infringement Lawsuit in Japan

Solar manufacturer Maxeon Solar Technologies, Ltd. has reached a settlement agreement with Chinese-Canadian panel maker Canadian Solar related to patent infringement of shingled solar module. As per the terms of the agreement Canadian Solar has agreed to withdraw challenges to Maxeon’s patent.

Court Uphelds Previous Ruling, LONGi Solar and REC to Pay Penalty

The Higher Regional Court of Düsseldorf has upheld the previous ruling affirming that LONGi Solar Technology Co. Ltd. and REC Group are liable to pay a penalty. Hanwha Q-CELLS Co. Ltd. has accused LONGi and REC for the illegal use of its patented technology. The defendants appealed against the court’s rule. Hanwha announced that the defendants have not complied with the court’s order for recall obligation, for which Hanwha should be awarded.

ITC Rules Win for Solaria in Canadian Solar Row

Administrative Law Judge Clark Cheney at the U.S. International Trade Commission has asserted that Canadian Solar Inc. has infringed patents of Solaria Corporation. Solar’s shingled solar modules infringe on two patents of Solaria on photovoltaic technology. The judge has suggested prohibiting imports of the infringing products as it violates the Tariff Act that bars the importation of products that infringe U.S. patents.

Solar Power IP Row Transferred from WDTX to SDNY

Judge Alan Albright of U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas transferred the ongoing solar technology patent infringement lawsuit between FTC Solar Inc. and FCX Solar LLC to U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. The judge found that the patent license agreement between the solar tracking company and the engineering consulting firm mentioned the Southern District of New York as the “exclusive jurisdiction for any matters arising from the agreement’s ‘subject matter.

PTAB to Review Solaria’s Solar Cell Patent

The Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) has approved the request for rehearing by Canadian Solar Inc. The company had requested a review of a solar cell patent owned by The Solaria Corp. PTAB had earlier denied a review due to a parallel investigation by the International Trade Commission (ITC). As the ITC investigation has stopped since September 2020, PTAB has agreed to the plaintiff’s petition for inter partes review.

Q Cells Enters into Patent Licensing Agreement with German Company

Q Cells has entered into a patent licensing agreement with a German solar module manufacturing company. As per the licensing agreement, Q Cells’ patent-protected solar cell passivation technology will be licensed to the German company.
