The Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) Programme between European Patent Office (EPO) and the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) has been made permanent as part of an extension to the earlier agreement. With the help of the PPH programme, patent applicants filing a patent at either office can have their application processed faster at the other office. Further, the two offices can enhance the quality of grants by leveraging each other’s work.

Change in Electronic Priority Document Exchange System Between CNIPA and KIPO

Owing to changes in Korean Intellectual Property Office’s (KIPO’s) migration and integration plan, the office’s access to the electronic priority documents enabled by a bilateral agreement with China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) got shut down from the 1st of January 2021. In solution to the closure, KIPO and CNIPA have agreed to use the WIPO Digital Access Service (DAS) platform for accessing the priority documents.

EPO and Superintendence of Industry and Commerce of Colombia Sign MoU

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed by European Patent Office (EPO) President Antonio Campinos and the Superintendent of Industry and Commerce of Colombia, Andres Barreto. As per the terms of the agreement, Colombia’s superintendence will have access to the work products, tools, and practices of the EPO to use in the process of granting national patents. The MoU strengthens the co-operation between the two offices.

WIPO Meeting for TISC in ASEAN Countries with Help from JPO

A virtual meeting was held by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) with support from the Japan Patent Office (JPO) for Technology and Innovation Support Center (TISC) officials from 10 ASEAN countries. JPO has been a regular contributor for the WIPO and the TISC program is supported by the office for the promoting sustainable economic growth of developing countries and to support Japanese companies that operate from these countries.

National Patent Application Drafting Competition, 2021 Launched

The 2021 National Patent Application Drafting Competition which has now expanded into a nationwide competition has started. Now, law school teams from across the nation and all US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) regional offices are participating. Notably, the competition challenges participating teams on the fundamentals of patent prosecution and primarily consists of two rounds: preliminary regional round and the National Finals. It has also been announced that team registrations will be accepted till November 7th and regional and final rounds will be held virtually in 2021.
